One of the earliest thriller films is Harold Lloyd's "safety Lasts," this was made in 1923. Like many modern thriller films, older films also include an escape, mission or mystery and the protagonist always faces danger. "Safety Lasts" is about an American boy who performs a daredevil stunt on the side of a skyscraper, it was filmed in black and white and has no dialogue only non-diagetic music.
Below is a clip showing Harold Lloyd on the side of a skyscraper hanging onto a clock that is slowly letting him down. It is in black and white due to it been filmed in 1923.
