Full Film Summary ~ 2nd Draft-

In the beginning a young primary school teacher Daryl Black enters his garage, where he looks through a worn-out scrapbook of a variety of different murders. He turns the page to a young girl Evie, and picks up a red pen to highlight ‘arsonist released from prison...’ We then focus on the wall of Daryl’s garage, and see a range of images of different individuals, each with a red cross, suggesting that they are no longer alive. However, the main focus is on a young woman in the centre of the board, his Goddaughter, Willow. Daryl places a wire in his pocket and places his hood over his head. At midnight Daryl leaves his garage and heads out to hunt for Evie. Daryl follows Willow as she walks home, listening to her music. Evie walks out into the alley way where Daryl strangles and kills her. Daryl quickly hides the wire used to strangle Evie, as he attempts to move the body, Willow realises she dropped her keys walking through the alley way, so turns back to retrieve them. As she does, Willow locks eyes with Daryl; however she is unaware that it is him, and sees the girl at his feet. Daryl abruptly stands up and leaves the alley way, carrying Evie. Willow quickly picks up her keys and runs away.

The following day, Willow leaves her house on her way to work and picks up the local newspaper. The main headline reads ‘young girl commits suicide in local park,’ Willow recognises the girl’s face as someone she knew a few years a go. Later that night she visits her Godfather to talk about the problems she’s facing. She tells him of two men who have been following her home from work every afternoon but isn’t sure why. She tells him that she recognises their faces but cannot recall them. He reassures her that she’s fine, and offers her a bed for the night. After Willow heads of to bed, Daryl is about to enter his garage, when he sees two men outside in a car, taking photos and looking directly towards the house. Daryl watches them for a few seconds and takes the registration number from the car. He then heads into the garage and tracks down the owner of the car. In the early hours of the morning Daryl leaves Willow in his house and heads towards a new estate. He pulls up outside the house and looks towards the car registration number and matches it to his photo. He pulls out an old newspaper article stating the man is guilty of credit card fraud. We then see the man flicking through old bank receipts, laughing and smiling to himself. Daryl enters the room and murders the man, once again making it look like a suicide. Daryl then returns home in the early hours of the morning and adds the man to his scrapbook, once again highlighting in red pen the man’s crime. Willow’s stalkers continue as the film progresses, each time Willow tells her Godfather of them and he deals with them.

Daryl is on his way to Willow’s house when he notices the second man from the car outside his house, and walks over. Daryl demands to know why he’s outside her house, and Brad replies by
telling him Willow owes him. Daryl invites him to his house to find out more and learns that Willow had caused the death of his fiancĂ©e, Maria, after the girls quarrelled on a night out. Willow attacked Maria and left her for dead in the alley way beside her house. He tells Daryl that she was never convicted of her crimes and now he wants revenge. Daryl asks Brad what other crimes he’s talking about and Brad informs him. A flashback is shown of Willow 5 years ago sat with Harry, as they use someone else’s bank card details to purchase their dream home in Florida. However, Daryl learns that Harry’s house was searched by the police and they found that he was guilty of credit card fraud. Willow wasn’t convicted due to lack of evidence against her; he tells Daryl that Harry swore to seek revenge on her, just like Brad. Another flashback is shown of Evie and Willow walking through the streets. He tells Daryl that 2 years ago, Willow and Evie set fire to a local park’s field and caused public destruction. Evie was convicted of this crime, but Willow only received a telling off, hence why she was too after Willow the other night. He explains that the three had formed an alliance, and promised to get rid of Willow and right everyone she had ever done wrong. Daryl doesn’t believe this and attacks Brad. As he lets him go, Brad warns him that Willow will get her comeuppance, and that if he doesn't believe him he should contact Aiden.

Daryl heads to Willow's house and is invited in by her. While the two talk about Willow's issues at work, Willow recieves a series of calls, however she ignores these. Daryl asks who she is avoiding now, but Willow reassures him that it is nothing, and she leaves the room. Whilst she is away, Willow recieves a voicemail. Daryl decides to listen to it and finds its from a man named Aiden, telling Willow that she can't hide from her crimes anymore and that he will come and end it once and for all. He then tells 'Willow' where to meet her tonight. Daryl deletes the message and leaves Willow's house. As Willow returns she finds the house emtpy and no trace of her Godfather.

Daryl attends the meeting later that night and confronts Aiden. Daryl attacks him, however Aiden gains the upperhand and demands to know why he is here. Daryl tells him that he is Willow's Godfather and that he was the one who listened to Aiden's voicemail. Aiden explains that 2 years ago, Willow killed his child, Kelly, after racing along the mainroad beside her house. Despite knowing that Willow was resposible, his wife blamed him for the accident and the pair divorced. His wife, Sarah, went to look for Willow wanting answers. She found her in a local park with a friend and a drunken Willow noticed Sarah and instructed her friend to set the field on fire, seriously injuring Sarah. Sarah fought her case in court, however, Willow wasn't convicted as she wasn't the one to set the field alight. Aiden tells Daryl that his ex-wife has been left mentally and physically scared. And that he wants to seek vengeance for both him and his ex-wife. Daryl believes that Willow is still innocent, and that the man is lying. Aiden becomes fustrated with Daryl and decides to take him to the graveyard where he buried his only daughter.

Daryl leaves the graveyard and enters his garage where he searches for information on the crimes Willow has been accused of. He learns that she was suspected but never convicted of a series of crimes, and learns that Sarah is now in a local mental institute, after never recovering from both her daughters death and from the physical scars. Upon finding this out he contacts Aiden and Brad and tells them that he has a plan and wants them to meet him outside his house tomorrow night. The next day, Daryl visits Willow and tells her that he went to visit little Kelly at the graveyard yesturday. Willow remains silent and carries on as normal. He then says he found that she had killed the girl and that Aiden is looking for her. Willow becomes frantic and asks why he knows Aiden. He reassures her that he will protect her and that she has nothing to worry about.

To be continued....

Possible Distributors-

I think that our film would be distributed for a national audience rather than a niche audience because other similar, Horror Thriller films have been released for a national audience and have done extremely well because a wide range of people like to watch horror films. For Example, as you can see in our other research, films such as: Silence of the Lambs, Insidious, The Last Exorcism etc have become some of the most popular horror films that have been released recently.

Our first option of distributors could be New Line Cinema who are quite well known for distributing horror films, such as The Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984 who also produced the film and its five sequels; Freddy's Revenge, Dream Warrior, The Dream Master, The Dream Child. They have collaborated with Warner Bros. Pictures who helped them distribute the famous film; Friday t
he 13th.
Another film which they produced and distributed is the film Se7en which is extremely similar to our film which is why New Line Cinema would be an appropriate company to distribute our film because they have had a lot of experience when releasing horror films.

Our second option for a distribution company could be Film District who have distributed Insidious and Don't be Afraid of the Dark. Both of the official posters of the
films are very good and you can immediately tell that they are horror films because they use dark colours to suggest danger and a sinister storyline but it doesn't gave away the main storyline which is what we need to have in our film posters and so Film District would be another appropriate distribution company.

If we were to release our film to a niche audience, our independent distributor could be Optimum, who have distributed over 200 films a year British, Irish and American Independent films with a low budget and so they are quite well known within distributing films for niche audiences. However, i would say that our film is more aimed at a national audience rather than a niche audience but if we were to release it using an independent company Optimum would be suitable.

Overall, i think that New Line Cinema would be the most beneficial distributors because they have distributed a large amount of horror thriller films that are similar to ours and so they have had plenty of experience when designing eye-catching posters and trailers. Furthermore, because they are well known distributors people are more likely to watch our film if they are familiar with the work of the distributors because they will know the types of that they have distributed and so they have a fan base already.

Title Sequences Analysis- Sweeny Todd-

I have chosen to use Sweeny Todd's title sequence to analyse because it is a very effective title sequence and it gives you a sense of danger which is what we want to show in our title sequence.

The title sequence for Sweeny Todd begins with an overview of the town the film is based in but the whole of the picture is dark colours, all the buildings are black and the sky is a very dark grey and the only colour that you can see is the rain drops on the screen which are a blood red colour which suggests death. This is a very effective way to begin a film because the blood coloured rain which hits the camera suggests that death can be found everywhere in the town. It then goes on to show a Barbour's chair in the middle of an empty room with dark grey and black floor boards. It then completely fades into black so you can't see any thing else which suggests death and loneliness. The colours have also got a blue tinge to them which suggests a cold and empty room or place. This technique of using a blue filter is often used in horror films because it makes the audience feel uncomfortable and nervous. The third frame shows a dirty wall with a mirror at the right side of the shot with a black silhouette of a man's face. The wall and mirror looks neglected and old. The room throughout the title sequence looks as if it has been abandonded for years. The fifth frame shows two black clogs and in between them is blood, the blood stands out from the dark blue/black clogs and it is the only proper colour which is shown throughout the sequence. I think that the main theme of the title sequece is blood because on every shot there will be blood running down a wall or a chair ect as it even rains blood as well.
The music used at the beginning of the title sequence is very quiet and slow which builds tension as it makes you feel as you are waiting for something to happen. Also, it suggests danger and gives an uncertaincy about the film. You also hear the sound of thunder and lightening and heavy rain which are very loud which contrasts with the quiet music. The music works really well with the images that you see on the screen because it builds tension and straight away you know that something bad is about to happen. As the title sequence progresses the music starts to get slightly faster and louder as the camera pans so you see the barbours chair which tells you that it is a dangerous place to be. Increasing the tension. As the camera moves down the barbours chair whilst the blood runs down it the music becomes louder and sharper and stops and starts suddenly with short pauses inbetween. Until finally towards the end the music is fast and loud preparing you for the rest of the film.

Recent Thriller Films- Insidious-

Insidious
Insidious is another Horror, Thriller film which is the same genre as ours. The female protagonist in our film, Willow first begins to be relatable to one of the main characters from Insidious, Dalton, a young boy who becomes a victim to an evil spirit trying to kill, and take over his body and similarly, Willow is being hunted by certain individuals who want to kill her. However, as we unravel the story we find out that Willow is in fact the antagonist of the film because of her criminal past of torturing and eventually murdering innocent victims who turn out to be her hunters. The films certificate is a 15 equal to ours because of the contence of violence and intense horror.

DVD Cover

Plot: A young boy Dalton, falls into a coma where doctors are unable to find the causes. As they began exploring the paranormal world, and in their attempt to rediscover the past they realise that this is what they have to do to get their son back.
Certificate: 15, contains violence, terror and frightening images and brief strong language.

Advertising: Theatrical Poster-
The theatrical poster for Insidious shows the young boy, Dalton, who the whole storyline based on. The poster is under exposed and the the only colour which stands out is the blood red colour on the 'SI' of INSIDIOUS. In the boys eye, you see the word 'Insidious' which suggests that there is evil is inside the boy. 'Insidious' is written on it's side implying uncertainty and confusion which is what the audience will feel as the continue watching the film.
We also see the house in the back ground which immediately tells us that the film is based in the house and that is where the evil will be preparing the audience.
This is a very effective poster for a horror thriller film as it immediately tells the audience to be afraid of the boy as they will expect him to be evil. However, as you actually begin to watch the film we see that the boy isn't the antagonist of the film, he is the victim. When the audience watch the film it will change their perspective of the boy making them feel compelled to watch it.
Film Reviews:
Insidious was a huge success and was the most profitable film of 2011 in terms of cost-to-gross ratio.
Rotten Tomato's- 67% fresh rating.
Roger Ebert, an American film critic -'Insidious is a very scary and very fun haunted house thrill ride.'
Steve O'Brain from WCBS-FM- Most terrifying film since 'The Exorcist'.

Official Trailer-

In the trailer, you see clips from the film but in between they cut to the title of the film: 'Insidious' and the 'SI' is swapped back-to-front saying 'is Insidious' and 'insidious is' which tells you that there is something bad within the film but without making it very obvious. The scenes at the beginning of the trailer show the build up to the main part of the story and as the trailer progresses it builds tension by gradually by showing more and more of the dramatic, horror scenes rather than the ones telling the basic story which makes views want to know more about the film. This would be similar to our film trailer (if we were to make one) because we would want to build the tension in the story as it progresses for a big, unforgettable ending. We want our viewers to be frightened and scared and question what will happen at the end of the film instead of working out what is going to happen at the beginning of the film. In the trailer you also hear a clock ticking which gets louder and louder as the trailer progresses which build tension until it stops and the build up of the film is shown. But only briefly so that the audience doesn't see too much of the film so they will want to know what the full storyline is.

Research into Title Sequences-

Title sequences is how a film or tv programme begins, it is shown in lots of different ways and techniques such as animation, plain titles, and filmes etc. They usually show the name of the film or tv programs and the key people who made and stared in it such as the director, producers, and actors. it is similar to the closing credits but only show key people about the film.
Fancy title sequences are fairly new because they used to have the whole list of cast and crew at the begging and at the end only said 'The End.' But now the cast and crew are shown in the closing credits and only the key people at the beginning along with key clips and sometimes animations that relate to the film.

Recent Thriller Films- The last exorsism-

'The Last Exorcism' is a horror, psycological thriller. It is similar to ours because it is the same genre and certificate; psychological Thriller and certificate 15. Another similarity is that there is a character who is trying to do the best for another person, in this case it is the Reverend  trying to help the young girl, and in our film it is Daryl trying to help Willow.

Plot-
Reverend Cotton Marcus recruits a documentary film crew to film his last exorcism of his career. He receives a letter off a desperate farmer who's daughter has been possessed by the devil. Reverend Marcus is their last hope and attempt to rid the demon from her.
certificate: 15 disturbing violent content and terror, some sexual references and thematic material.

Advertising;
The advertising poster shows the young girl who is possessed by the devil. The name of the film is clearly shown big and bold in the centre and information saying who wrote it and who stared in it. The main colour are red and white to represent blood and innocence, it also looks as though it is slightly overexposed. However this poster was banned in the UK after complaints that it was unsuitable and distressing for public display.

Film Reviews-

'Rotten Tomatoes' says, it doesn't fully deliver on the chilly promise of its Blair witch-style premise, but the last exorcism offers a surprising number of clever thrills.

ViewLondon says "Brilliantly directed, superbly written and genuinely scary, this is a hugely enjoyable horror flick with terrific, star-making central performance from Patrick Fabian.

Official Trailer-

The trailer starts with short clips of the begining of the film and every so often fades in a title screen with a bit about the film for example the actors, characters, whats happening. it starts off bright and the further into the trailer the shorter the clips become and the darker the lighting. the colours red, white and black run through out the trailer and the film in the lighting, clothing and scenery.

I have researched his film because it is similar to the type of film we are wanting, for example it has a strange twist at the end, there are killings, a bit of blood also it keeps the audience wanting more and has them on the edge of their seat to find out what happens and how it get resolved.

First Draft- Synopsis-

Primary school teacher, Daryl Black seeks out corrupt individuals to protect his innocent God daughter, Willow, who is unaware of the dangers she is facing.
But as Daryl gets involved in his victims tortured past, he finds out Willow has a hidden secret.

Recent Thriller Films - The Silence of the Lambs-

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Is another thriller horror film, similar to ours. One of the main characters can be relatable to one of our main characters, Daryl, as both characters choose the life of a killer but do so to help someone, in this case to capture new criminals, in our case to protoct his Goddaughter. The woman FBI agent can also be compared to one main female character, Willow, as she is the protagonist in the film, however our main protagonist becomes an antagonist by the end of the film as the audience learn that she too has a criminal past, and is responsible for the tormented lives of many individuals. The film is rated an 18, in comparison to our 15 certification, due to strong profanity used and the whole theme of the film being dark and intense.

Plot: An FBI agent is assigned to help find a missing woman to save her from a psychopathic serial killer who skins his victims. She must seek help from a manipulative killer, Hannibal Lecter, who used to be a respected psychiatrist, to locate the killer.
Certification: 18
Advertising:
- Theatrical Poster:

The theatrical poster used is simple, using a range of dark, contrasting colours setting the theme of the film. The strong use of red suggests a dark nature behind the film and that there will be danger and uncertainty involved. Furthermore the whiteness of the font and the person's face contrasts with the bloody red, suggesting purity. In addition the dark shadow at the right of the image suggests a dual personality, as though there is evil in all of us.

Reviews of the film:
The Silence of the Lambs was a sleep hit that gained widespread success.
Rotten Tomatoes ~ '96% fresh rating'
Roger Ebert (American film critic)~ recognised the film as a 'horror masterpiece,' and compared it to films such as Nosferatu, Psycho and Halloween.
Official Trailer:
The trailer has a narrator with dialogue from the clip in between, to build up tension and suspense. The trailer also includes flash effects as an attempt to draw the audiences attention and keep them on edge. The title emphasises the word 'silence' by using red font to show its importance within the film, we could use this in our film title sequence in order to draw the audiences' attention to something we wish them to see. We could use this as inspiration to our own work and interpret the techniques used to match ours.
After researching into a recent Thriller film, The Silence of the Lambs, we were inspired by certain elements. The plot involves an FBI agent having to work with a serial killer, to track down criminals. After researching into this we decided a further plot development was required in order to create a motive for our main antagonist killing these people. In order to create a twist we took inspiration from this film and manipulated it into our own story. The antagonist had a motive, but the twist came from our decision to develop Willow's character into an antagonist role. We decided that she should have a dark past, similar to the serial killer in 'TSotL', in order to create depth and realistic elements to her character.

Research into Genre, Thriller-

One of the earliest thriller films is Harold Lloyd's "safety Lasts," this was made in 1923. Like many modern thriller films, older films also include an escape, mission or mystery and the protagonist always faces danger. "Safety Lasts" is about an American boy who performs a daredevil stunt on the side of a skyscraper, it was filmed in black and white and has no dialogue only non-diagetic music.
Below is a clip showing Harold Lloyd on the side of a skyscraper hanging onto a clock that is slowly letting him down. It is in black and white due to it been filmed in 1923.

Through out the years thriller has changed and become more gory and violent but increasingly popular. Lots of genres now fuse together to create sub-genres for example action thriller, psychological thriller and horror thriller etc. This is to create a more exciting film watching experience.

You can tell if a film is a thriller because it uses suspense, tension and excitement. Most thrillers include an escape, mission or mystery and the protagonist always faces danger.
There are lots of new thriller films  been released in 2012 films such as 'The Grey,' 'Cold light of day.' and 'Man on a ledge' which is slightly similar to 'Safety Lasts.' (The first thriller film)

A few examples of well know thrillers are:

The great escape, filmed in 1963
Escape, mission or mystery- to escape from a German POW camp
Protagonist facing danger- getting caught making the tunnel and while escaping

Silence of the lambs, filmed in 1991
Escape, mission or mystery- To stop a serial killer by getting help from another serial killer
Protagonist facing danger- Been around killers and facing her inner demons

Se7en, filmed in 1995
Escape, mission or mystery- To hunt down a serial killer
Protagonist facing danger-  Trying to hunt down the serial killer without been killed

We have researched the genre 'thriller' because we can have mysterious elements and use lots of techniques to make it interesting, spooky and mind twisting.

Film Certificates-

The Video Recording's Act 1984 introduced that all 'video works' must be classified by the BBFC, unless they fall within the definition of an exempted work. There are different categories for films these include, 'U' - Universal, 'PG' - Parental Guidance, '12A' - Suitable for 12 and above, parental guidance for below, '15' - 15 years and older and '18' - Suitable for adults.
'U' Universal -
The guidelines for this certificate are:

- No discriminatory language or behaviour unless it is dissaproved of.
- No references to illegal drugs or misuse, unless it is for educational purposes/dissaproved of.
- Any scary sequences should be mild, and shouldn't case lasting anxiety for those watching. The outcome should be reassuring.
- Infrequent use of 'mild' bad language
- No potentially dangerous behaviour that may be copied, with no emphasis on easily accessible weapons.
- Occassional natural nudity
- Only mild sexual behaviour (e.g. kissing) and only references (e.g. making love)
- Problematic themes must be approached carefully and appropriate for young children.
- Mild violence

'PG' Parental Guidane -
Guidelines for this certificate are:

- Discriminatory language or behaviour unacceptable unless clearly disapproved of/educational
- Drug references only allowed if disapproved of or educational
- Horror/frightening sequences shouldn't be prolonged or intense.
- No detail of dangerous behaviour which is likely to be copie
-
No glamorisation of realistic or easily accessible weapons.
- 'Mild' bad language only
- Natural nudity with no sexual content
- Sexual activity may be implied but only discreetly and infrequently
- Mild sex references and innuendo only
- Strong themes should be resolved
- Moderate violence permitted, without detail, if justified by its context (e.g. history or comedy)

None of these certificates would have suited our film due to the restrictions put in place. The restrictions on violence would have hindered our film due to the nature of our plot, which involves heavy violence and death/murder themes. Our film would not be suitable for younger audiences, such as those watching 'U' and 'PG' films.
The certificate for our film could have been:
'12A/12'
The guidelines for this certificate included:

- Discriminatory language or behaviour will only be acceptable when condemned.
- Misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamourised
- Moderate physical/psychological threat may be permitted, but only if it is frequent
- Dangerous behaviour may occur, but shouldn't be in detail that may be copied or appear pain/harm free and easily accessible weapons shouldn't be glamourised
- Moderate language is allowed, with strong language allowed but must be infrequent
- Nudity is allowed, but in sexual content must be discreet and brief
- Sexual activity may be brief and discreet and frequent crude references may not be acceptable
- Mature themes acceptable but must be suitable for teenagers
- Moderate violence allowed but shouldn't dwell on, no emphasis on injury/blood but occassional gory moments be shown if justified by its context. Sexual violence may only be implied or briefly and discreetly indicated, and must have a strong contextual justification.

'18'
The guidlines for this certificate is very minimal:

The adult watching this film are doing so at their own free will and own choice of entertainment.
We could have used these film certificates for our film as they are less restricted than the previous. A '12A/12' allows some moderate violence but isn't allowed to be dwelled on or in detail. This would be a problem for our film as the main theme is based on violence/murders, this would be a difficult obstacle to overcome. Moreover, this certificate only permits infrequent use of psychological/physical threat which is a constant theme within our film. Taking all of this into account, a '12' certificate would not be suitable. In addition a certificate of '18' would be inadequate for our film, as the violence and themes chosen are not that strong that only adults may view it. Our film is a lot more toned down in violence, and does not include scenes of sexual nature. So upon this research, we have decided an '18' certificate would also not be suitable.

Our film will have the 15 certificate.
The guidelines include:
- Violence may be strong, but shouldn't dwell on pain and injury.
- Nudity may be used in a non-sexual context or educationally. If use in sexual-content must be mild.
- Drugs may be shown in the film but must not promote it.
- Shouldn't glamourise dangerous behaviour, including weapons and self-harming/suicide, if used shouldn't be encouraged.
- Frequent use of language is permitted, only if justified by the context, repeated use of language isn't permitted.
- Sexual activity may be shown without strong detail.
- Strong threat is permitted unless sadistic/sexualised.
- Must not promote/glamourise discriminatory language or behaviour.

When filming our movie we will follow these guidelines and make sure we don't promote/endorse the behaviour, language or theme's suggested.

Our film will need to be a 15 due to strong violence and suggestive themes to do with death and murder. The frequent use of these suggestives themes will be suitable for this audience.
