Genre Research Continued-

We decided to change our storyline slightly and now the genre of the film is a psychological thriller because our main character has Schizophrenia however she is unaware of this.

Psychological Thriller is a sub-genre from horror and characters tend to use their minds to overcome the problem whether they are battling an opponent or themselves. The suspense is built from two or more characters and their decisions and thoughts.
Psychological films usually focus' deeply into the characters life and their mind. The film is usually based on the life of a specific character and the suspense of the film comes from that specific character and you come to understand how they are thinking mentally.
Psychological Thriller usually incorporates aspects of drama genre as well. Whereas thriller genre usually focus on the plot rather than a characters life and builds suspense through physical action rather than the characters mind.

Psychological Thrillers have changed and adapted over the years but they still use a main themes:
  • Reality
  • Perception
  • Mind
  • Existence/Purpose
  • Identity
  • Death
These main themes help to develop the plot and characters lives, minds and personalities. The character usually finds their true identity and finds the devil inside of them which indicates a loss of innocence.

The Sixth Sense PosterAn example of a psychological thriller is 'The sixth sense' about a boy who can communicate with the dead and tries to get help from a disheartened psychiatrist.
